MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK

Understanding the link between social performance and the impact on operations is crucial, particularly in the mining sector. Unlike other sectors, poor engagement, miscommunication, a lack of grievance mechanisms and a misunderstanding of community expectations can lead to work stoppage, social unrest and property damage. We must manage our community relations with the same rigour with which we manage our production.

At the highest levels, we are guided by our Sustainability Policy while the IAMGOLD Management Framework provides specific guidance on the following:

  • Leadership
  • Governance
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Risk & Change Management
  • Crisis and Emergency Preparedness
  • Social Stewardship

The framework also provides guidance on Environmental Stewardship. More detail can be found on this in our Environment Section. While the IAMGOLD Sustainability Framework is the cornerstone of our social management, sites receive more rigorous guidance on social management through a combination of third-party and internally developed frameworks/guidance tools:

  • The Mining Association of Canada’s (MAC) Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) Initiative
  • The IAMGOLD Community Relations Handbook
  • The IAMGOLD Community Relations Audit System

Community Relations Handbook and Audit Tool

A community relations handbook was developed in 2010/2011 in collaboration with representatives across all sites for the purpose of guiding site-level practitioners through the many aspects of community engagement and development. The handbook utilizes best practices from the world’s mining- and community-relations leaders, and incorporates guidelines and standards set out by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the Canadian Mining Association’s Towards Sustainable Mining (TSM) program, and the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights. To accompany the handbook, the group of representatives has constructed a community relations audit protocol, which was piloted in 2011. The tool will help set a strong IAMGOLD standard for community engagement and development.

The Handbook is not yet publicly available.
