We are also committed to building capacity in the regions where we operate. Here is an example of the work we are doing in some of those regions.

Rosebel

In an effort to boost local hiring at our Rosebel operations in Suriname, the community relations team at Rosebel re-evaluated its local hiring program in 2010, with a renewed focus on community capacity building. Along with changes made to hiring protocol, improved communication about hiring and the creation of job coaching sessions for local residents, the team also worked with several partners to create a local training initiative to give locals the type of job skills required to work at the mine.

IAMGOLD established a partnership with logistics conglomerate Kersten (www.kersten.sr) and the Caribbean Heavy Equipment Educational Center (www.cheec.net) to develop a locally based equipment training program and a technical school. Launched in 2010, the program is accessible by all seven local communities. It will increase the number of permanent and qualified positions for local individuals, reduce unemployment in the local communities, and provide transferable skills for local population.

Essakane

A training center (CDF) was created at Essakane to promote the development of the local workforce and the Essakane staff in order to increase the skill level of employees and prepare for expatriate succession. It provides training programs adapted to the company’s needs and educational engineering services to support the training personnel.

The center was officially inaugurated on December 12, 2011 by Steve Letwin.

Quebec

A unique IAMGOLD partnership in Quebec has been offering mining students hands-on training opportunities throughout the Abitibi region and beyond. IAMGOLD has formed a partnership with the Commissions Scolaire de l’Or et des Bois, which allows the educational organization the use of IAMGOLD facilities for training purposes. Cohorts of students are received every year at both the Mouska mine and the Westwood construction project to complete their internships. On site, they are provided with training, mentorship and supervision from the mine employees.
