We continue to deliver on our promise, implementing several initiatives last year.
Our employees continue to make a difference at work and in the communities where we live and work. Employees spent more than 6,500 hours volunteering and provided support to more than 470 organizations across the country. In addition:
In 2017, women made up more than 40 per cent of Intact’s Board of Directors. At the vice president and above level, women represented more than a third of our leaders in Canada. Every year, we participate in events across the country celebrating our diversity. In June, our LGBT and Allies network hosted 29 workshops across Canada to share with more than 300 employees on being an ally, as part of our diversity celebrations.
Each year, we invest approximately $11 million towards employee training and development programs. In 2017, almost 200 employees graduated from our customized leadership programs designed to help them advance their skills and succeed.
As our business grows, we are attracting more top talents and experts with new skill sets such as specialty lines underwriters, mobile app developers, data scientists and software engineers.
Millennials make up 40 per cent of our workforce, and 21 per cent of our employees are under 30 years of age. To attract young professionals, we have built strong relationships with several universities across the country, offering internships in information technology and actuarial sciences. We also give out four scholarships each year, to encourage young professionals, particularly women, to pursue studies in the field of software engineering. Our commercial lines trainee program offers graduates accelerated professional and technical training in two years to give them a head start in commercial insurance.
To stay on the cutting edge of advancements in technology, we have also invested in a number of leading Canadian universities and research institutions in the field of artificial intelligence such as Laval University, IVADO and the Vector Institute.
